Bajo el título «Todo es verdad. Ficciones y documentos (1987-2020)» se presenta la exposición del fotógrafo Jorge Ribalta en la Fundación Mapfre de Madrid. El nombre está tomado del célebre pero inacabado documental de Orson Welles It’s All True [Todo es verdad] (1941-1943).
El proyecto conforma la primera exposición retrospectiva de Jorge Ribalta y recoge el paso desde una fotografía ilusionista de escenificaciones iniciada en 1987 hasta su llegada a la fotografía documental, cuyo punto de partida tiene lugar en el año 2005 y que hoy en día continúa practicando.
Jorge Ribalta (Barcelona, 1963) es comisario, crítico de arte y fotógrafo, actividades que ha compaginado desde el inicio de su trayectoria en los años 1980. En 2005 su trabajo experimenta un cambio radical que lo divide en dos períodos opuestos, al menos en su concepción de base. Durante el primero de ellos, su obra se focaliza en explorar poéticamente el naturalismo construido de la fotografía, mientras que en el segundo reorienta sus proyectos hacia una reinvención del documental.

Para Valentín Roma, comisario, esta exposición «reúne más de tres décadas de práctica, investigación y teoría fotográfica de Jorge Ribalta y, a la vez, constituye un recorrido por las gramáticas y las políticas del documento visual en el contexto español».
A partir de los grandes conjuntos y una lógica serial, el montaje expositivo, cronológico, reúne 14 series de trabajo comprendidas entre finales de los años 1980 y 2020. También incluye una sala de proyecciones y material documental que ofrecen un amplio panorama del trabajo del artista.
En 1987, Jorge Ribalta comenzó a trabajar en sus primeras escenificaciones con miniaturas en el estudio, una labor que se prolongó durante quince años. Con estas imágenes el artista ejercía una crítica a la representación.
En un viaje a Nueva York, en 1997, experimenta con diapositivas en color de 35 mm para fotografiar sus puestas en escena y filmarlas posteriormente con una cámara de Super 8 mm, lo que le permite crear un efecto de movimiento y de paso del tiempo en las imágenes fijas.
2005 supuso un momento de inflexión para el artista, que comenzó a fotografiar las transformaciones urbanas de Barcelona. Estudiar la historia urbana de la ciudad fue su manera de testimoniar la época. En 2007, recibió una invitación para fotografiar Tarragona en el contexto de un proyecto sobre el legado histórico de esta ciudad, declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco. De ahí surgió Petit Grand Tour, una observación de los procesos, museográficos y turísticos, que confluyen en la producción de los discursos sobre el pasado y que argumentan que la historia es una construcción. El autor emprendía así un análisis y una crítica de las instituciones artísticas y del trabajo cultural.
Tras diez años en el cargo, en 2009, Ribalta abandonó su puesto como responsable de Programas Públicos en el MACBA y comenzó una intensa labor curatorial en la que la investigación histórica adquiría un gran peso y en la que el trabajo de archivo le ofrecerá un nuevo punto de vista sobre el papel de la fotografía en el arte moderno, tema en el que sigue ahondando hoy en día.
